“Alice“ is 150 !
Last Weekend we celebrated Alice in Wonderlands 150th Birthday with a Mad Hatters Tea Party and an Open Day.

The world famous fantasy story “Alice in Wonderland” was first published in 1865. The author of the book was Lewis Carroll, the pen name of Reverend Charles Dodgson.

This highly talented Victorian gentleman enjoyed Eastbourne so much that he spent 22 summer holidays staying at 7 Lushington Road, where he rented rooms from a Mrs Dyer who owned the property and ran it as a guesthouse. The house is currently a dental practice run by Mark Fellows and his wife Catherine and has been granted a Blue Plaque to commemorate the connection with Lewis Carroll.

Lewis Carroll’s imaginative mind first created the story of “Alice in Wonderland” to entertain the three children of an Oxford colleague. Alice Liddell and her two sisters enjoyed boating and taking a picnic during the summer at Oxford where Carroll was a Don at the University. He taught Mathematics, Theology and Philosophy and wrote many papers and books on a wide variety of topics.

It was Alice who persuaded Lewis Carroll to write down his story of “Alice in Wonderland”. From that beginning it developed into the book that we know today with all its imaginative adventures and captivating images.

An intriguing dental link occurs when one reads that the fastidious Lewis Carroll, who enjoyed the Eastbourne theatres and Downland walks, also enjoyed his visits to his dentist on Seaside Road. He would visit his dentist to have his teeth cleaned almost daily during his stays. He also encouraged others to do likewise if they wanted to keep their teeth free of problems. A great example to us all even if it was a little over the top!

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of “Alice in Wonderland” Mark Fellows, his wife Catherine, their enthusiastic colleagues and staff dressed up in colourful costumes of characters encountered in “Alice in Wonderland” and served up a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at the dental practice.

There were tempting cakes, jam tarts of course, and freshly brewed tea, all from Victorian style china. Games for children – Pin the Grin on the Cheshire Cat! And a fantastic Hat and Teapot cake creation to admire. Prizes, balloons and themed bunting all added to the celebratory atmosphere.

Patients, friends and passers-by had the opportunity to find out about Lewis Carroll, the famous author of “Alice in Wonderland”, and his historic connection with 7, Lushington Road, Eastbourne in the surprising setting of Fellows Dental Practice! Please do feel free to pop in and view some of our memorabilia on display.

Dental Implants in Eastbourne

Losing a tooth is a traumatic experience. Whatever the cause, a missing tooth can make you embarrassed to show your smile in public. But did you know that missing teeth cause more than just aesthetic problems?

dental implantsWhen teeth are lost, extra strain is put on any remaining teeth. They may also move position into any gaps, becoming crooked and hard to clean, while over time the bone beneath where your teeth used to be starts to recede.

So if you’ve lost a tooth, what can you do? One increasingly popular solution is dental implants. Unlike other options such as bridges or unsecured dentures, dental implants are permanent and actually integrate with your bone, not just providing a stable base for tooth replacement but also helping to prevent bone loss.

Dental implants are colloquially known as replacement teeth, but strictly speaking they are more like replacement tooth roots, onto which tooth replacements are attached. They are made of titanium and are placed directly in the jaw bone with a minor surgical procedure. Replacement teeth in the form of crowns, bridges or secured dentures are then fitted on top.

Although they have grown massively in popularity in the last decade, it may surprise you to learn that implants have been used for the past 30 years. They are now widely regarded as one of the best long-term solutions to tooth loss.

Here at Fellows Dental Practice, principal dentist Mark Fellows holds a Masters in Dental Implantology and has successfully treated many implant patients.

Dental implants restore not just your confidence in your smile; they also give you back full functionality, meaning you can enjoy all your favourite foods once more.

So please do call the practice and ask to see Mark for a consultation on dental implants.

Looking For A New Dentist – Referring Your Family and Friends

Choosing a new dentist is one of the most important decisions that you will make. Whether you are new to an area and need a new general or family dentist, are looking to enhance your smile with cosmetic dentistry, or haven’t visited a dental practice in some time, there are many factors you’ll want to consider.

family dentistryGood dentistry is built on a relationship of trust. You need to know that your dentist and their team will put you first at all times. At Fellows Dental Practice, we are proud that many of our patients are so happy with their treatment that they recommend us to their family and friends. It’s the biggest compliment we can receive, and a word-of-mouth recommendation from a trusted source is a great way to find a new dentist.

Here are some common questions you might want to ask when looking for a new dentist:

Is the practice well-established, and are the team experienced?

Fellows Dental Practice was established in 1977 by Mr and Mrs Fellows senior, and taken over by their son Mark and his wife Catherine in 2008. The team comprises very experienced clinicians with Masters degrees in Implantology and Cosmetic Dentistry. They are also well qualified to deal with all general dental needs.

I’m terrified of the dentist but toothache is driving me mad. Can you help me?

We understand that lots of people are nervous about dental appointments, for many reasons. Our team practise caring and compassionate dentistry, and will take the time to listen to your needs and fears, before doing our best to allay them. We have a wide range of options for nervous patients and will never be judgemental if you haven’t visited a dentist in a while. We’re here to help!

Will you treat my whole family?

At Fellows Dental Practice we welcome patients young and old. We are committed to family dentistry, and offer a Dental Care Plan to help you spread the cost of treatment and your routine dental care.

Family Dentistry

img_0466There have been lots of terrible stories in the media lately about the state of children’s teeth. Children in the UK have a very high level of tooth decay, which as well as being painful for the child can lead to further problems later in life. Many studies have shown that children who have visited a dentist from an early age have better dental health as adults. Fellows Dental Practice prides itself on being a family practice, offering the highest quality dental care to patients of all ages. We recommend bringing children to visit the dentist from an early age. Children can come along with their parents as soon as their first teeth start to appear. By watching their parents or older siblings having a check-up, young children can copy what they see and will get used to sitting in the chair and opening their mouth for the dentist to look inside. The aim is to learn that the dentist is a friendly face, and that visits are nothing to be scared of – in fact, they can even be fun! There’s even a TV in the ceiling above the dentist’s chair, so little ones can enjoy their favourite cartoon or movie while the dentist checks their teeth. To strengthen teeth and help prevent decay, we offer treatment with fluoride varnish and fissure sealants. Visiting the dentist from an early age also makes it easier to spot orthodontic issues such as underbites, overbites or crossbites developing. We firmly believe that prevention is better than cure, and the sooner these issues are spotted, the quicker they can be fixed.img-712img-0609

Hidden Sugar? Where is it???

Is Sugar Hiding In Your Food? The instant ‘lift’ we get from sugar is one of the reasons we turn to it at times of celebration or when we crave comfort & reward. However, even those of us without a sweet tooth may be eating more than we realise because so many everyday, processed foods, from cereals & bread to pasta sauce & soups contain sugar.

Spot the hidden sugar

Low-fat & ‘diet’ foods often contain extra sugar to help improve their taste & palatability & to add bulk & texture in the place of fat.  Even savoury foods, like ready-made soups & sauces may contain added sugar. A can of soft drink, on average, contains the equivalent of seven teaspoons of sugar. The natural sugar in some fruit, including apples, has increased as new varieties (including Pink Lady, Fuji & Jazz) are bred to satisfy our desire for greater sweetness.  Check the Label…  Discover how much sugar is in your food by doing these simple checks:

  • Look at the ‘carbs as sugars’ on the nutrition panel – this includes both natural and added sugars.
  • Check the ingredients list for anything ending in ‘ose’ (glucose, sucrose, fructose, lactose, maltose) – these are all forms of sugar, as are honey, agave, molasses and syrups like corn and rice syrup. The higher up the ingredients list, the more sugar the product contains.
  • Know your substitutes – for example xylitol, sorbitol and mannitol. These occur naturally in small amounts in plants and fruits and are often used in low-calorie products to provide sweetness but with fewer calories and less detrimental effects to your teeth.

Our Advice – Keep an eye out, and avoid snacking as snacking leads to more bacteria in the mouth leading to more tooth decay !  For further information and advice please speak to your dentist.
