Why you should take children to see the dentist from an early age

Many people who are nervous or phobic of the dentist cite a bad experience during childhood as the trigger point for their fears. At Fellows Dental Practice in Eastbourne, our practitioners are skilled at working with young patients. We firmly believe that by bringing your child to visit the dental practice from an early age, you can help them to have a good relationship with the dentist, and good oral health, for life.

preventative dentistryAt Fellows we are proud to be a family dental practice, treating many youngsters from Eastbourne and beyond. Our dentists take the time to form a relationship of trust with young patients, so that they learn that visits to the dental practice are nothing to be afraid of.

We recommend bringing your child into the practice soon after their first teeth start to appear. By coming along with parents, guardians or siblings, they can observe and copy what they see, such as sitting in the chair and opening their mouth for the dentist to examine their teeth.

At our Eastbourne dental practice we also offer a number of preventative treatments for children, including fissure sealants and fluoride varnish, which help to strengthen the teeth and prevent tooth decay. This, combined with early intervention, can help to prevent the need for more invasive treatment at a later age, which can otherwise be distressing for both child and parent.

Children in the UK still have a very high amount of tooth decay. Whilst statistics are improving, there is still a lot of work to be done, and bringing your child to see the dentist sooner rather than later is a good place to start. We have a strong focus on preventative dentistry at our Eastbourne practice, providing age-appropriate hygiene advice and tooth brushing tips.
